MANITOBA -- The Responsible Gambling Council launched its "kts2" program at the University of Manitoba this week. Spokesperson Crystal Richards says the interactive problem gambling awareness project is aimed at 18 to 24 year olds because research has shown this group is at highest risk for developing a gambling problem.
Richards notes kts2 uses social media including a Facebook page and peer to peer messaging with Bluetooth texting and an online blog as well.
She adds they set up an interactive display at each campus they visit across Manitoba, which gives them an opportunity to talk with students about the risks involved with gambling and how to avoid them.
Richards says kts2 started last year and was based on the success of the first "Know The Score" program, which began back in 2001.
She notes they've received excellent feedback over the years, with evaluation showing 89 percent of students who participated felt they were better informed to make decisions regarding gambling and about one fourth of participants indicated they had used the information they received.
Richards adds they give every student a magnet with the provincial Problem Gambling Helpline's phone number on it, so they can seek assistance for themselves or a loved one.
