Online gambling a growing problem
24 February 2010

From TVNZ Wednesday, February 24, 2010:
New Zealand -- There are fears about the impact that modern technology is having on gambling.

Problem gambling experts from around the world are meeting in Auckland this week to talk about the growing popularity of online gambling.

Professor Robert Williams, a problem gambling prevention expert from the Alberta Gaming Research Institute in Canada, says online gambling is the new emerging problem in gambling.

He says all new forms of gambling have a big initial patronage and when a lot of people get involved in it, a lot also develop problems with it.

Williams told Greg Boyed on TVNZ News at 8 he thinks the main problem with online gambling is 24 hour accessibility to it on home computers.

He says other problems are that people can gamble online while intoxicated, and underage gambling online.
