Professional Development Grants

One of the four strategic priorities of the Nova Scotia Gaming Foundation is Building Capacity to Make a Difference. To help build the capacity of Nova Scotians to address problem gambling in their communities, the Foundation is pleased to offer Professional Development Grants at both the individual and the team level.

Grants are awarded on an ongoing basis throughout the year, so there are no specific deadlines to apply.

Individual Grants
The NSGF will sponsor individuals who wish to enroll in Fundamental Concepts of Problem Gambling, an online course available through ProblemGambling.ca. This five-week course provides students with a practical understanding of gambling and problem gambling.

These grants are available for staff members or volunteers in community or other eligible organizations. Individuals must apply for the grant before taking the course, and the NSGF will reimburse the course fee upon proof of successful completion.

Team Grants
Team grants are intended to build the capacity of service providers to address problem gambling in Nova Scotian communities. Activities must therefore be designed to meet this goal.

Some examples of appropriate training activities include the following:
  • A half- or full-day Gambling 101 Workshop for staff or volunteers
  • A workshop to increase clinicians’ skills in interventions, addictions treatment, and case management for people experiencing gambling disorders
  • A course on motivational interviewing techniques for eliciting motivation to change problem gambling behaviour
  • Other relevant training that builds the capacity of participants to address problem gambling in their communities
Half-day workshops may be funded up to $500.00.
Full-day workshops may be funded up to $1000.00

Please note that the NSGF does not provide the training: organizations must find or hire trainers or facilitators themselves. However, the NSGF is happy to provide assistance in finding an appropriate facilitator if required.
