Gender Issues in Gambling

This report confirms that problem gambling among women in Canada is an important public health concern. A public health model was used to understand the relation between types and frequency of gambling activities and problem gambling among women in Canada.

Women Problem Gamblers Want More
 
Historically, research into problem gambling has focused upon men, with a male-centered focus upon education, prevention, and treatment. This resulted in a misconception that women do not develop problems with gambling. The women in this study reported they were more comfortable in an all-female counseling environment, and would prefer this setting as opposed to a gender-mixed group.
 
This 2009 research study explores gender differences in gambling behaviour within the public health model with specific focus on the social attractions and consequences of gambling. It uses concept mapping to look at compare the differences and similarities in the conceptual frameworks of male and female gamblers.

Dubois indicates that the risk factors for, and treatment needs of, women who are experiencing gambling problems are different than those of men.  Therefore, says Dubois, it is important to recognize and appreciate the unique needs and issues of women who gamble.  Includes some of the indicators of problem gambling, treatment recommendations, and suggested references.
