Prevention

This report, funded in part by the Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre, reviews and evaluates and pilot problem gambling prevention program which was administered in an Ontario school setting. The results indicate that students can be effectively taught about the utility of coping skills and can also develop their understanding of random events and critical thinking skills.

Gambling in Childhood and Adolescence: Information for School Personnel
This article includes a review of risk factors, signs and symptoms, and evaluation and treatment options.  It also offers suggestions for schools to help raise awareness of gambling issues, and subsequently to promote prevention.

Using an Educational Video to Protect Students From Problem Gambling
As more and more youth are participating in gambling behaviors, it is important to identify means to prevent adolescents from developing gambling addictions.  A previous study found video presentations to be more successful in changing attitudes than traditional lectures among junior high students.  Here, gambling awareness video effectiveness was put to the test. The video was found to improve overall knowledge of problem gambling, and decreased student misconception.


Know the Score
Know the Score (KTS) is an interactive problem gambling awareness program that engages university and college students in a fun and informative way. Know the Score dispels some common myths regarding randomness, shares signs of problem gambling, tells students where they can get help with gambling-related problems in their local community, and suggests ways to limit their risks.
